Coming Clean, and a Challenge
Have you been to my friend Essie’s blog lately? With a gentle nudge from me, she left blogger for WordPress and left “The Mommy Diaries” and re-branded as Essie’s Blessings. I couldn’t be prouder of her. As you know, we recently spent a week of vacation together. And, according to her camera, which must not lie, I spent most of the week with my back turned to her. She posted several photos of my rear end on her blog. Like in this post . . it looks like I might even have a wedgie. Oh joy.
Now, I’m a big girl. I love my coffee and my food. I can get around without huffing or puffing. So, I generally don’t worry much about my weight. But, since turning 40, things have gotten, erm, tighter in my house. My clothes don’t fit. Except, of course, my maternity clothes. Those fit just fine. Except, I’m not pregnant. And heck, even some of those are getting tight.
I sometimes think that I have that distortion disorder, you know the one. The one that makes super skinny girls think that they are fat and leads them down the road to anorexia? Yep. I have that, only mine is that I picture myself as super skinny. And then I see vacation photos and think gah! What happened to me?
So, the time has come. The time has come for me to face up to the reality that I have more than a few pounds to lose (more like 50!). I have a few options. I can eat and drink as I have been, and increase my fitness level. I can go on a strict diet and remain sedentary. I can join Weight Watchers (ooops, looked into that, I did lose weight with them in the past, but I obsessed about food, and it is over $40 a month. I’m not a wealthy blogger.)
I don’t want to do this alone! So, I decided to go with the free route and (re)join Sparkpeople.com. This is a great, free website that offers meal planning, food and exercise tracking, weight tracking, goal planning, inspiration and GROUPS! Yes, I had the brainstorm that I could start an It’s Time For More Coffee group! So, I started one.
I’m asking you guys to join me in my journey to better health. Let’s encourage each other and set goals together. I’m going to set new challenges each week (this week’s is pretty easy). I’m going to have giveaways geared for the members of my Spark group and we can all share in each others successes and challenges! So, what do you say? Are you in? Just head on over to Sparkpeople.com and sign up. Go ahead and friend me, I’m the only Dakotapam there! Then go ahead and sign up for the It’s Time For More Coffee group! I promise to be kind!
I’m setting aside Sunday as weight loss day on the blog, and will share recipes and tips and my progress. Monday mornings will be my weigh in days, so you can join me with that too!
I can’t wait to see you over in the It’s Time For More Coffee Spark People group!
Gentle nudge. HA. More like a big sister shove.
I’m so glad I ate those cookies and milk BEFORE I read this. I’m in, sista.

Good for you Pam! I look forward to following your journey!
Thanks! I’m hoping the accountability is the key I’ve been missing!

Yep, I am in the same boat. I saw a picture of myself the other day and just about fell on the floor. I have been trying really hard to lose the weight and it is not coming off. Losing weight after 35 is not fun at all. I may just have to check out your group.
No fun at all. But join the group, at least we are in the same boat!

Might do this as well! my problem is finding things to prepare for dinner etc. Maybe I’ll get some ideas from you, of course I have a finicky eater here which doesn’t make it easy.
My picky eaters have to fix their own food:)

I did it! I joined last night!
I’m in Pam.

Hi Pam,
I too had the realization a couple of months ago. I started doing a modified version of ww (as I was not going to pay) lost 16 pds just watching what I was eating and drinking more water.. Started walking 2-3 miles 3-5 days a week and I now workout with a trainer 2 days a week. I needed someone to “hold my feet to the fire” I am now down a total of 22 lbs. I also did my first 5K this year (i walked) but I did do it and am looking forward to doing a couple more.
If I can do it, anyone can!!! You go girl!!
Thanks Cathy! Yes, I just need to do this! Tracking my food I realize how terribly I eat! I insist on my children eating three balanced meals a day, but I was subsisting on junk! Time to take care of me, so I can be there for the grandkids some day!

Ah. I remember now why I stopped using SparkPeople. I did join the It’s Time For More Coffee group, and i will be checking in on weigh-in days. But I would rather spend the time exercising than going back and forth logging in and saying, “Yes, I really DID want to record my weight,” or reset that parameter, or whatever. I’m too ADD or too old or something!
I totally get that! Early on, I need the accountability, and I kind of live and work online, so it is easy. Thanks for joining! And check in as often (or not) as you want!

I just joined. Hope we can all support each other!

I’ve never used spark people but it’s great you have found a group to support you. I feel like that makes all the difference in getting fit.
