The Family Dinner: Review and Giveaway!
One of the unwritten rules of Dakotapam’s house is that dinner is non-negotiable! Dinner time is family time. Period!
I was delighted then, to get the opportunity through my membership at The Product Review Place to review the new book, The Family Dinner: Great Ways to Connect with Your Kids, One Meal at a Time, by Laurie David.
This book is a treasure trove of information, ideas and delicious recipes. If you are a person who devours cookbooks like a novel, this book is for you! There is a forward by Harvey, Karp, MD, which discusses the health benefits of eating dinner as a family.
If you already eat together as a family, you will still get some great new ideas! I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter on setting a creative dinner table. It is a good reminder that we eat with our eyes first, and having an attractive dinner table will encourage us to linger longer, even after the food is gone.
There are over 75 recipes by Kirstin Uhrenholdt, and though I’ve not cooked any yet, I look forward to trying “Crunchy Chicken Schnitzel with Tangy Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and Big Peas and Little Peas”.
The Family Dinner is loaded with advice and ideas from such heavy hitters as Alice Waters, Jamie Oliver and even Judge Judy! (Did you know that she once hired an etiquette coach to teach better table manners at home?)
The Family Dinner includes strategies for getting kids of all ages involved in meal planning, preparation and even clean up!
I especially enjoyed the chapter on “Your Green Table”. It is no secret that Dakotapam leans to the right politically. However, that does not mean that she is all about trashing the earth! On the contrary, as a faithful steward o God’s creation, I try to live as simply as possible. The kitchen is a great way to begin some greener living. We use cloth napkins and we don’t use paper towels. We almost never use paper plates and we eat as locally as we can whenever we can. I may even get brave and start composting soon. I appreciate the friendly reminder to serve water, and only water at the dinner table. Not only is this healthier for us, imagine the money we will save on other beverages!
