My Life With Twins: The Portable Pediatrician Review and Giveaway
The Sears family has been a part of our family ever since I was pregnant with our first child and I read the Birth Book as I prepared to enter the world of motherhood.
It was not until our second son was born that I read several other Sears books, such as The Baby Book and The Breastfeeding Book
and I realized that the parenting style that I most connected with was attachment parenting. While I am not a full blown attachment parent (I was never able to get a good night sleep when co-sleeping, the twins have rarely been carried in slings, etc.) I knew that being in tune with and responding to the needs of my children was the best way for me to parent.
When I got the opportunity from Hachette Book Group and The Product Review Place to review the new addition to the Sears Parenting Library, I jumped at the chance.
The newest book in the Sears Parenting Library is The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child’s Health.
Those of you who have read here for any time know that I have been mothering for a while, over fifteen years, to be exact. During this time I have seen many changes in pediatric medicine. Take cough syrup for example. When Andrew was a baby it was advisable to treat colds and coughs with over the counter cough remedies. Now, when my one year old twins have colds I have been advised to increase fluids, but to avoid cough syrups.
It is valuable to have an up to date, trusted source of pediatric medical advice on hand. The Portable Pediatrician is just this source.
The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child’s Health
is divided into four parts.
The first part is titled “Four Things All Parents Must Do to Keep Their Children Healthy”. This section is devoted to helping you to select a pediatrician, how to get the most out of check-ups and office visits, an introduction to the Dr. Sears guide to head to toe guide to keeping your child healthy, and an explanation of the pills-skills approach to medical care.
The second part is titled “Well Baby and Well Child exams:How to Get the Most out of Your Parent-Pediatrician Partnership. This section guides you from the newborn physical all the way through adolescent sports physicals. Dr. Sears discusses what is generally looked for at each of these exams as well as different safety and behavioral issues that may arise during these ages and stages. I plan on looking over the appropriate chapter before each of our upcoming check-ups so that I am better able to know what to ask our fabulous family physician.
Part Three is the longest and most valuable section of the book. “Pediatric Concerns and Illnesses:A to Z” takes the parent from abdominal pain to yeast infections, along with everything in between. This section is especially valuable for parents who may suspect a problem and need to know whether a particular symptom requires a visit to the ER, an office visit, a wait and see approach, or a change in diet. This section is also sprinkled with great “Dr. Sears Tips”. This is not exactly a section that is designed to be read page by page, but to be used as reference as questions arise.
Part four is called “Medicine Cabinet” and has advice on how to give medication, allergic reactions, the use of antibiotics, fever and pain relief(along with very helpful weight based dosing charts for pain relievers). There is also a very helpful section on stocking your home medicine cabinet.
Remember when I told you that things are always changing in pediatric medicine? Well the Sears family is aware of that and are keeping up a Portable Pediatrician Update section on their website www.askdrsears.com. And, The Portable Pediatrician is truly portable as it is available as an app for your mobile device!
This book is a great resource for new and seasoned parents. It is a great baby shower gift, and I even tucked a copy into the box that I sent for my new nephew Henry last week (more on that tomorrow).
The Portable Pediatrician: Everything You Need to Know About Your Child’s Health
is available at Amazon.com as well as most of your favorite local book sellers.
Hachette Book Group has also made one copy available for me to give away to one of my awesome readers! To enter, simply leave me a comment telling me your favorite Sears Parenting Library book. Since this is “My Life With Twins Monday” if you are a mom (or dad) of a multiple you get two (or three or four) entries. Please leave a separate comment for each entry, and please be honest! I will select a winner through “And the winner is…” next Monday, February 28 at noon CST.
Hachette Book Group has a policy of only giving away one book per household, so if you have won this book from a giveaway on another website, you are disqualified from winning one from here.
*Because of my relationship with Hachette Book Group and The Product Review Place I was given a complimentary copy of the Portable Pediatrician to review. I received no other compensation and all opinions are my own.
Oh, I love Dr. Sears as well. The Breastfeeding Book helped me survive my first child and our breastfeeding adventures!

The Baby Book~!
I received The Baby Book and The Breastfeeding Book when I was pregnant with the twins. The Baby Book has always been referred to as our Baby Bible. Not sure I could have made it without that book!
I have never owned any of Dr. Sears books but I have read things on the website and I too was never an attachment parent completely but I do try and go with the flow of what my child needs instead of CIO etc whenever possible.
ACK! Can I still qualify??? I don’t think I’ve ever read any of their books but just minutes before reading this post I was in tears about what to do with my Sweet Pete. I keep finding out that just because he is number 4 doesn’t mean that I have a clue about what I am doing. Lord, help me! I’ve told Kory I want advice on what to do with him but not guilt. Anyway…hope I’m still qualified! Sorry for rambling.

Definitely AP here – and have twins. If it weren’t for babywearing I’d be sunk. I’ve never actually read a Sears book (cringe, I do look at his site!) but I bought four of them (Baby, breastfeeding, birth and pregnancy) for my best childhood friend’s pregnancy announcement. I was assured by many they were the best choice.
I’m not familiar with these books, but what you describes kind of sounds like what my son and DIL are doing with 4 mo. old Henry. If I win, I will give it to them!
I haven’t read any of the books yet but I find this one interesting:

I loved the breastfeeding book with my first.

Hey Pam, I have never actually read any of the books but I work with alot of first time moms that could really benefit from this book and open up mote knowledge through the other books ad well. I would love to share it with them. Mine is 16 now, so he’s kinda on his own
Hands down my favorite books from the Sears’ docs are “The Pregnancy Book” and “The Attachment parenting book”… granted we never completely followed the attachment parenting style with our twins ( I couldn’t figure out how to sling them both at the same time and had to let one of our daughter cry more than I’d like to admit) they were godsends to our family.
I am also interested in reading their NDD book…. I have recently been trying to get healthier foods into my children in hopes of getting better ‘results’ in their behavior and stresses….

I have only used Dr. Sears website and haven’t actually bought a book. This book looks very helpful as I am always second guessing whether I should call or take my son to the doctor.
Thanks for the review!
Pam I will be honest I do not have one book from Dr. Sears, but I go to his website constantly!! It would be ultra nice to have this book, because I really enjoy his information.
