My Chocolate Buying Guide
Now that my good pal Essie has resumed stay at home mom status (at least for now), she is back at my beck and call…which means I can phone her when I’m bored. Which, actually happens a lot. Because dishes are boring, and folding laundry, and sitting in a parking lot waiting for a kid. All boring.
So, yesterday talk turned to chocolate. It began as chocolate chips in banana bread…which is a total no go in my house (poor kids)! I’m a banana bread purist, and the chocolate is just too much.
Then I launched into all of my chocolate rules. At which point, Essie pointed out that, once again, I have far too many rules.
Here are my chocolate rules (in case you want to chocolate shop for me):
- No dark chocolate (I’m not eating chocolate for my health anyway! –exception I will eat one Hershey’s Special Dark miniature if I get desperate.
- No nuts in my chocolate– exception Snickers bar.
- No citrus flavoring.
- A brownie is not chocolate.
- No chocolate on chocolate (I don’t want to have to distinguish between chocolate flavors) exception I will eat a slice of Nancy’s Homemade chocolate cake with her fudgy chocolate frosting…
- No cheap chocolate. European is ideal…but I’m poor…Hershey’s or Dove are acceptable, dollar store chocolate is not worth the calories.
- No chocolate in coffee… exception White Mocha, which, let’s be honest, is really a creamy vanilla.
Yes, I’m quirky. I own it. I’m actually not a huge chocolate fan (can you tell?) However, leave sweet, chewy candy around and kiss it good-bye! I’m going to devour your licorice and your gummy bears!
Chime in! What are your quirky food rules?
Well… let’s see…
)
No dark chocolate (I’m not eating chocolate for my health anyway! –exception I will eat one Hershey’s Special Dark miniature if I get desperate. – totally agree with this one.
No nuts in my chocolate – disagree. I love the Mr. Goodbar’s!!
No citrus flavoring – disagree – we love the orange chocolate at Christmas time.
A brownie is not chocolate – agree. I would prefer chocolate ice crea,
No chocolate on chocolate -disagree. The more, the better!
No cheap chocolate. Hershey’s or Dove are acceptable, dollar store chocolate is not worth the calories. ditto, and Russell Stover Easter Bunny’s. I’d rather throw it out.
No chocolate in coffee… exception White Mocha, – totally disagree here. I love my mochas. Raspberry mochas especially.
However, leave sweet, chewy candy around and kiss it good-bye! I’m going to devour your licorice and your gummy bears! – Agree too!
You can have all of the chocolate oranges we end up with at Christmastime!

I tend to prefer pure chocolate (without nuts) but I do enjoy Snickers. Still, I’ll take chocolate anyway – anytime – anyplace!

I will eat the Chocolate oranges too. Yum. Unless they’re dollar store chocolate oranges. Then no. My chocolate list: Dove, Hershey’s and Ghirardelli are all acceptable. Hershey’s minis are great, but only with peanut butter. Hot fudge=ok. Chocolate syrup=not ok. Chocolate needs to be smooth and creamy. Not grainy and powdery. *shudder*
I have similar rules with ice cream. I prefer a creamy, non-chocolate base. It HAS to be creamy. I do not eat ice cream from machines in buffet restaurants, those are usually full of ice crystals. I prefer Culver’s, but our McDonald’s and DQ in town have very creamy ice cream. But not the DQ in the neighboring towns. Not acceptable. If I buy Ice Cream, it has to be Edy’s, Blue Bunny premium, or Ben and Jerry’s. Cheap ice cream is NOT good ice cream. And ice cream is ALWAYS better when it’s not straight from the freezer.
I think you know that our house is FULL of quirky food rules.

Oh, Stone Cold Creamery is probably my favorite. Mmmmmm. Just thought of that one.
Because I didn’t look crazy enough with that last comment.
There’s a reason we’re BFFs.

Yeah, it is amazing we ever got past each other’s rule filters!

So all these years, you and Esther have me thinking I am the only one with serious quirks. You just let the cat out of the bag. LOL.
By the way, I think you are way off base on some of your chocolate rules. No dark chocolate? To use your language, “Really?”
At least we don’t like the Cowboys.
And white chocolate? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

White chocolate is nasty!!! I love milk & dark chocolate but only in candy form. I can take it or leave it with cake/brownies too!
I really do like white chocolate…which probably just goes to show that I’m not much of a chocolate fan:)

Wow! I’m a chocolate slut (sorry, but you know what I mean) and eat it in all forms and flavors, so it’s interesting to read about someone who’s kinda *meh* on chocolate. I buy the dark chocolate Pound Plus bars from Trader Joe’s (when I can get to a TJ store) and nibble off pieces whenever i need a choc fix. I’m meh on gummy candy, so we’d make a great trick-or-treating duo!

Yes! We can trick or treat together! Now, that chocolate raspberry mousse at Nichole’s was to die for though! I must just like chocolate as a very special treat:)

Esther, that was a low blow, but that’s about what I would expect from a Packers fan. Sorry, Pam, but I had to do it.
wow, you two! Fighting about sports…on this decidedly non sporty blog:)
