PaperlessKitchen Review and Giveaway
Raising a larger-than-avereage family, I am increasingly aware of ways to reduce our waste.
All of the children’s clothing is either hand-me-downs or are handed down. We always carpool. I purchase food on sale and in season. I try to reuse everything I can.
And, one of the biggest money saving and waste reducing moves I have made in the last 10 years is that I have moved to a paperless kitchen. Yes, that means that we don’t use paper napkins, paper plates, or even paper towels.
At first it took some getting used to. Dakotapastor was used to ripping off a clean paper towel every time he washed his hands. It takes more time to fold cloth napkins all the time. Keeping a supply of cloth washcloths and towels for wiping up and cleaning takes up additional space.
However, we have learned that cloth napkins and towels are much more effective than their paper counterparts.
I was delighted then, to discover PaperlessKitchen.com. This clever little online storefront has absolutely everything you need to “green” your kitchen. I loved seeing the People Towel.
They also offer bamboo dinnerware, including this adorable bamboo baby feeding bowl that is a great alternative to plastic feeding bowls and utensils.
But the product that I was able to try, and the product that I really did fall in love with was the Skoy Cloth. These Eco-friendly cleaning cloths are an affordable way to cut down paper use in your kitchen. These biodegradable cleaning cloths are made from natural cotton and cellulose pulp. When wet they feel like a super thick, absorbent paper towel, but they are much sturdier! These cloths absorb 15X their weight in liquid (I think the kids are spilling things just to test them!). They can be sterilized for two minutes in the microwave or can be washed in the dish washer or washing machine. I think they do a great job cleaning counter tops and tables and I’ve even used them to get sticky messes off of my floor. They don’t get smelly like sponges.
Each Skoy Cloth can be used enough times to be the equivalent of 15 rolls of paper towels!

We reduce waste by using reusable lunch boxes and containers instead of paper bags and ziplocks. Oh, and I use reusable grocery bags too!

4 kids who make a lot of messes. Enough said!
E-CLOTH STAINLESS STEEL CLOTH favorite product. New Ouse has stainless steel and I am looking into ow to clean it!
Sounds like a good item!
I love the bamboo dinnerware! It would go perfectly with our kitchen! As for what we do to reduce waste we use microfiber cleaning clothes all the time! We actually haven’t bought paper towels for our house for at least a couple months now!
I can a lot of our food. The only waste is the metal lid and that can be recycled!

Thanks!

Sounds like something everyone should try! It’s unbelievable how many paper towels we go through at our house…these boys are constantly spilling things!
I know I seriously need to use less paper towels in our house. I’m just too lazy to buy more towels and then hate to wash them in tiny loads of laundry. Such a waste of water. Would love to build up my stock of towels with this win and love their other towels/cloths too. Like the e-cloth kitchen pack

To reduce waste, we’ve stopped hand washing our dishes and use the dishwasher. Our bill shows it! Also, we bought a Prius instead of a minivan.

Always looking for a way to stay green I appreciated your blog entry. I have a very large family as well, and as much as I appreciate your sentiments, when I stop to consider all the water and the detergent I would be using if I did away with paper products, not to mention the energy used to wash all that stuff, I have to admit, I don’t know that the payoff is worth it for me or my carbon footprint. I don’t mind giving up convenience when it will payoff big, or even small, but to break even when I already have a hard time keeping up with the demands of a family of 8, just doesn’t seem realistic. Thanks for your sacrifice however, Mother Earth probably is very thankful.
reuse things to stop global warming.
Some time back I began a journey of greening my kitchen using the cloth napkins and I have never regretted it. It makes me feel good about myself. The only issue with the napkins is that you must always have a fresh supply so it helps to purchase them in bulk so that you can always have a dry set available. What I hate is having a few damp dirty towels in the kitchen. As long as you can manage the laundry part I think you are good to go. So far, I love my “paperless kitchen” and the opportunity to live a more socially responsible lifestyle.
Yes! With 8 of us in the family we have a HUGE supply of cloth napkins. However, I do at least a load of laundry a day (8 people, hello!) So I am able to toss the napkins and damp towels in whatever load I am washing:) My three year old twins do the napkin folding. (They don’t do a great job, but they do the job!) Thanks so much for chiming in!

Hi pam
Paper towels hopefully will slowly become a relic as we all slowly get away from our disposable society because let’s be honest we have to and if a small step is like your doing getting rid of the paper towel then that lets us go on to the next item and the next and hopefully this will then snow ball. So keep it up.
Thanks lee
