My Mint Jean Misson

  Mint jeans outfit

Every season I try and add a few fun pieces to my wardrobe. I am a fairly “safe” dresser, and I am trying to expand my horizons. However, I am also very budget minded–so I cannot go out and buy a whole closet full of clothes every season.

I am thankful for fashion bloggers (especially ones who are real women) and Internet resources like Pinterest and Polyvore to help me imagine outfit possibilities.

At the beginning of each season I make a shortlist of things I want to add to my closet. I then also tell my friends, so then can clue me in when they see something they think I will like.

This spring, I decided I am on the lookout for mint denim pants, red denim pants (these can work all year!) and some floral pieces.

I assumed (rightly) that the floral would be hard to come by. I don’t want tiny sissy floral (think: my favorite dress in 6th grade), but I don’t want a loud tropical print either. And, while I am not young, I don’t want to look old.

I did NOT anticipate how tough it would be to find mint denim! My Pinterest and Instagram feeds are flooded with it–however, many retailers are thinking of it as “last year’s color”.  Well, guess what retailers–this 40 something takes more than two weeks to decide whether a new fashion trend is worth investing in.

I shopped around a lot, online and in person. The closest I could get to a mint denim pant was a distressed pair of mint jeans. This mom just does not wear ripped jeans–trendy or not. I spend half of my weekday mornings sending children back to their room to change out of ripped jeans–I certainly cannot be THAT mom! Plus, I am far to practical to pay good money for ripped clothing.

Sunday I finally fund success! A quick trip to Gordmans netted me an adorable pair of mint jeans–with just enough spandex to make them forgiving! The best part? They were only $24.99! At that price, I might go back to pick up another pair in Cobalt blue. (They also had a nice coral pair–but I already picked up a cute pair of coral ankle pants this spring). I like how grey loooks with mint green so I picked up a fitted tee for $6.99.  Gordmans had some lovely floral tops, but none of them spoke to me yet–so instead I found this awesome floral statement necklace for only $12.99!

This whole spring outfit cost less than $50! I’d say that is a winner!

Filling out my winter wardrobe with Gordmans

Although I have had my “new job” for almost three years now, I am still fine-tuning my work wardrobe. It takes a lot to transition from “mommy wardrobe” to office wardrobe.

I have taken baby steps and feel like I am finally coming into a sense of style. We are so fortunate to be living in an Information Age with Pinterest and Instagram to help us hone our sense of style.

Gordmans was kind enough to send me a gift card in the new year to take a little shopping trip to add another sweater to my wardrobe. I have leaned heavily on cardigans these past few years, but I am trying to branch out.

I have neither a large clothing budget nor a large closet. (My bedroom closet is smaller than some coat closets.) Because of this I have developed a few rules for my clothing purchases. I used to be the queen of clearance, and, I arguably picked up some great deals. However, all of my “deals” left my closet a mis-mash of pieces that did not work together.

I’ve explored the concept of a capsule wardrobe, and in a sense, I work within this framework. I went through my closet and dresser and took out anything worn-out, dated, ill-fitting, and uncomfortable. Then I looked at what was left and worked on setting up outfits. Everything had to go with at least three different clothing pieces. And then I cleared out duplicates as well. I only need one pair of black jeans and only one pair of black dress pants. So I picked my favorite of each. I narrowed down to one pair of skinny jeans, one bootcut dark wash denim, etc.

Now when I look at my seasonal closet I can see the gaps.

I went into my shopping trip looking for a neutral colored poncho (preferably camel). I looked and looked, and while I found several ponchos that I liked, they were going to duplicate too much in my wardrobe. The pretty grey, cable knit poncho was too close to my grey cable-knit tunic sweater and my grey long cardigan. There was a pretty black poncho with red and grey stripes, but it was going to be too limited style-wise. So I began looking for poncho style sweaters and came across this buttery-soft camel cowl neck poncho sweater. Since I am plus-sized, I benefit from a more fitted sweater rather than a straight poncho. I still am showing more gut than I would like (thank you holidays!) but I really feel good in this sweater. It also is so neutral that it goes with almost anything.

Yes, a wintertime office selfie–keeping it real!

I really wanted to style it with my plaid blanket scarf, but that scarf is so bulky I may just have to use it as a blanket. Instead, I styled it with a lightweight plaid infinity scarf.

All in all, this was a fun purchase, and I feel pretty good about the hole it is filling in my winter wardrobe. A quick glance at Pinterest showed me some fun ways to style this sweater. I look forward to trying it with my red ankle pants and I love being a rebel and pulling my white jeans out in winter as well!

Updating my Fall Work Wardrobe with Gordmans

Gordmans

This is my third fall season in my not-so-new job. As I wrote about earlier this week, my work wardrobe has been a work in progress, and I finally feel like I have been hitting a mindful stride in what I wear and how I wear it.

Back in August I was approached by Gordmans, a discount department store, to do a feature on back to school shopping. I was happy to do so, but, at the time, our nearest Gordmans store was about three hours away. When I looked at the website, I noticed that a brand new Gordmans store would be opening right here in town at the end of September. So I asked if we could change the editorial focus to Fall work fashion.

Shopping at Gordmans is a new experience for me, but not a new store at all. As a matter of fact, Gordmans is celebrating 100 years this year! And because of that, Gordmans sent me a $100 gift card to spruce up my fall wardrobe and to learn more about Gordmans.

From their website, I was able to learn a little more about the Gordmans story:

Born in 1915 out of a small retail store at the corner of 16th and Chicago in Omaha, Nebraska, Gordmans is proud to celebrate more than 100 years in business. Fashion trends may come and go, but Gordmans has thrived knowing that low-cost, high-quality apparel and décor are always on-trend.

“We’ve delivered high-quality merchandise at great values for 100 years. Not many companies come close to fulfilling that promise, or lasting that long,” said Andy Hall, president and chief executive officer. “Looking toward the future, we will continue to build our national brand portfolio and further enhance the guest experience as Gordmans continues to grow by adding stores and ecommerce channels.”

First, I peeked at the website, as I’m learning to plan my clothing purchases more carefully. There was quite a variety online, but merchandise varies from store to store. Guests can now conveniently shop online at Gordmans.com, providing 24/7 savings of up to 60% off department store prices, anytime, anywhere. There is also free shipping on all orders over $75.

I arrived at the new store with a few things on my list. I was looking for burgundy jeans, a long cardigan, a burgundy top, and a camel blazer. The store was well laid out, and very large. I am a seasoned discount shopper, but often find shopping at discount stores to be overwhelming, as there can be so much sorting out to do when looking through the racks of clothes. I was happy to see that Gordmans has everything set out neatly and attractively and it was easy to sort by size.

I thought that this sign in the fitting room was cheery!

I ended up finding a long, grey cardigan that will go with much of my fall wardrobe, a cute, comfy, swingy burgundy top, and a fun pink and white chevron tunic top that gets me compliments every time I wear it. (I am generally afraid of bold prints, but I am working on getting out of my comfort zone!).

I also found some fun accessories–like this sliver toned wristwatch with just the right amount of bling, and some gold toned earrings to balance out my earring collection. I have been working on getting more accessories into my wardrobe as they really do make the outfit! Gordmans

I even was able to pick up a pair of fun umbrellas for the twins who had been begging for them–which is a guarantee for no more rain!

All of this for $101! I also joined the gRewards program and I am halfway to a $10 reward plus, I earned $10 in Gordmans dollars! Gordmans

I don’t *need* anything more for my fun fall capsule wardrobe. . .but I am sure I’ll be back!
