People aske me all the time if I knew I was having twins before that BIG ultrasound. My not so simple answer is, yes and no.
I have always been paranoid about twins. I carry big, I measure large early, and then I have a big baby, just one. So, yes, I joked a bit early on in this pregnancy that there was more than one. But I never REALLY thought there were TWO babies in there!
So, this pregnancy was much like my others. I was sick, and tired (perhaps more sick and tired…but I’m five years older than I was last time I played this game). I have gained almost no weight…I am just barely gaining back the 7 pounds I lost when I was so sick. I never measured ahead of dates until AFTER the ultrasound, and even that measurement is pretty on par for how I have measured for all of my babies.
I did, however, dream that I had twin girls early on in my pregnancy, back when I still slept at night. The Rev. pretty much discounts dreams. Plus, I think I always have twins on the brain. I have several friends who are twins, several who have twins, and one of the other moms at school is due to deliver twin boys any day now. What are the chances that I would have more than one child, really?
From my reading, I’m finding that it was more likely for me to have twins than to not have twins at this point, which I’m glad I did not know BEFORE I got pregnant. I am over 35. I have had several children. I am tall. I am overweight. I eat a healthy diet. All of these are factors in conceiving twins. People ask me if twins run in my family and I laugh and say, “now they do!”.
To be honest, I think it is just our way of not doing things halfway…our family has tended to jump in with both feet on things…so here we go! Life is an adventure!
