Twins: Alike or Different?
Lizzie and Emily are just over two and a half years old right now. They have such different looks, that they hardly look like sisters, let alone twins.
Our twins have always been a riddle. From the time of our first ultrasound at nearly 21 weeks their zygosity was up for grabs. They shared a placenta, but were in separate amniotic sacs. When they were born, they looked different, but not totally different, and I have photos where I am not completely certain who is who.

Then, the pathology report came back on the placenta, revealing that they were mono-zygotic (identical), but by then they looked pretty different. So we shook our heads.
So today, we have one twin with curly, relatively fast growing hair, one with straight, slow growing hair, one with hazel eyes and one with blue, and relatively two same shaped and sized bodies. Developmentally they developed at the same rate, with the exception of talking and potty training. One has had her two year old molars for months, the other just began cutting them.
Eventually I’d love to have a DNA zygosity test done to see exactly what DNA the girls share. But really, it does not matter.
What matters is that I have two, lovely, healthy, relatively happy little girls. And, at the same time, they each have a built in best friend. And that they are. . . the best of friends!

We’re Supposed to Be*
We’re supposed to be twins,
So why are your so tall?
We’re supposed to be twins,
So why am I so small?
We’re supposed to be the same,
But you have better hair.
We’re supposed to be as one.
It really isn’t fair.

Love the poem! I have identical twin girls, at least that is what we were told as well. They were just like your twins, shared a placenta but were in separate sacs. We can totally tell them apart but other people say they look alike, even though sometimes we are not 100% sure either. And just like you when we look back at pictures of them as babies, they do look a lot alike and we can’t tell which is which sometimes.
We’re Chinese, so our hair is usually always stick straight and we have dark brown/black eyes, so the girls are the same in that sense. Maybe because we are the parents so we can always tell them apart.
LIke you, we probably won’t ever do a DNA test because we are just happy to have healthy twin girls that are so fun and amaze us everyday with fun twin stuff!

My favorite part of this post is “they each have a built in best friend. And that they are. . . the best of friends!”
For Gina and me, we are BEST friends and always will be. A lot of who I am today is based on the fact that I have an identical twin and grew up with her always having my back and always agreeing with me. As I am so fond of saying, for me there is nothing better in the world than being a twin.
I am so happy for your girls and the very special relationship they have now and will always have together.
