Work can be fulfilling, and even fun!

There seems to be a negative stigma surrounding work. You’ve seen them, the memes that go around Facebook about Monday being the very worst day of the week.

Let me be straight with you. I’ve been at my new job for just under a year now. I’ve not dreaded going to work for one single day.

The old saying is true, “Do what you love and you never work a day in your life!”

But, sometimes getting to that point is hard. When I began my job search, I was not really sure what job I would love. I had been out of the working world for many, many years. The things I studied in college were decades away; and my goals, ideals and aspirations had changed along the way as well.

I knew that I wanted to work with social media, I knew that I wanted to write, and I knew that I wanted to help and encourage people.

Every Working Woman Needs a Job Coach

What I really would have benefited from was a job coach. One of my major regrets of my college career was not taking advantage of the career counseling center. This office helped students refine their resumes, prepare for interviews and even had some job placement assistance. Because of my lack of direction, I avoided the very people who could help give me direction!

In the years that passed since my college graduation in 1994 a lot has changed in the working world. Resumes are no longer typed on typewriters and printed on thick, pastel colored paper. Increasingly, more and more resumes are not printed on paper at all, rather they are electronic and sent via email to potential employers.

I navigated all of these changes and crafted resumes and cover letters and prepared for interviews alone. Well, not completely alone. I had my trusty friend Google to help me along.

I went through a grueling interview process with a state government job that I did not get, and yet it gave me the confidence that I was employable. I continued to apply for positions of increasing responsibility and scope, and finally, after months of hard work, landed the job that I now love and flourish in.

I still would have benefited from a coach. And, truthfully, I still devote part of my work week to developing and improving my skills. I have challenged myself to read one professional book a week. (I’m currently reading Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, and wish that I had started it even sooner.)

    My advice: Even if you’ve been a SAHM for years and years, don’t sell yourself short. You have skills. Skills you’ve gained after years of mothering. Those years sitting in a chair cuddling and reading with my children have paid of in a children’s librarian job that I LOVE. Think of the book The Help: “You is kind, You is smart, You is important.” You matter, and you will matter to someone who wants to employ you.

      This so, so true! It took me a bit to be able to toot my own horn and sell my skill set. It turns out that my years as a stay at home mom paid off well. I had experience in event planning with volunteering with MOPS and church events, I had valuable social media and business skills from working on my blog. I even picked up learning PhotoShop while I was on bed rest!
