How to Start a Bullet Journal : Part 1-Gather your Supplies

Welcome to the How to Start a Bullet Jouranl series!

Today you will learn about the bullet journal supplies you are going to need. While you might want to eventually pick up some other items, the following list provides everything you need to get started. I totally recommend starting simple and working up from there! The simpler that you start, the more likely to keep up with your BuJo!

If you want to learn the very basics of bullet journalling, you really should start with the “founder” of the bullet journal, Ryder Carroll. What I will teach you in this series is very loosely based on his original concept. He also has written a FANTASTIC book on his method, which drills down on the philosophy behind the bullet journal method. (if you purchase the book, I recommend purchasing the hardcover version, as the Kindle version is harder to follow with all of the drawings and diagrams.)

It is easy to go overboard with bullet journal supplies. As a child of the 80’s I have a thing for stickers and color and bright, shiny objects. However, sometimes all of that can get in the way of the beauty and simplicity that is the bullet journal!

This is not to say that my bullet journal lacks color–on the contrary, it is quite vibrant. I am just a lot more selective now that I have my bullet journal well in hand.

Buy Your Journal or Notebook

The notebook is your most important bullet journal supply!

The first bullet journal supply to purchase is, of course, the journal itself. For beginners, you don’t need to worry about the type of journal or notebook you get.

It is not uncommon to upgrade to a different type of book when you get a handle on bullet journaling and have more of a grasp on how you will use it.

For now, look around and find something that feels right. Keep in mind your budget, since you will have a few more supplies to buy. Starting with a basic notebook is absolutely fine!

Some of your options might include:

  • Spiral notebook
  • Soft or hardcover journal
  • Journal specifically designed for bullet journalling
  • Planner converted into a bullet journal

One thing that is good to make note of when you buy the bullet journal is looking at the size and the types of pages. You might be using different types of pens and embellishments, so something with thicker pages is typically better. Also try to choose a journal that has at least some completely blank pages without lines so they don’t get in the way of sketches and calendars you will create in the journal.

Don’t Forget the Writing Utensils

Supplies are key to your bullet journal.

The next bullet journal supply decision to make is what you will use to write in your journal. Again, this will depend on what you like writing with and how creative you want to get. You really don’t need more than a single pen you enjoy writing with, but you might eventually want to get different varieties.

It is good to have colored pens when you are writing different sections or grids on a page, in order to organize them properly.

Having some pencils and erasers on hand is good when setting up pages for the first time, so that you can erase your mistakes.
